Test Fast Facts
Anonymous Testing: For anonymous testing, you do not have to give your name or provide a health card to receive a test. When you arrive for your test you will be assigned a number. Only you will be able to get your results by showing your number to the clinic. If you test positive, your identity cannot be revealed or recorded because no one will know who you are.
Standard Testing: The nurse takes a blood sample from your vein. Results for an HIV test take an average of one - two weeks to return. Test results are given in person whether the test comes back negative or positive.
Rapid Testing: The nurse takes a drop of blood by pricking your finger. They test it at the clinic while you wait. You get your result in five to twenty minutes. If the test we is negative, no further testing is necessary. But, if the rapid test is positive, the result will be confirmed by taking a tube of blood from your vein and completing a standard test.
What Happens If I Test Positive?
Testing positive for HIV in Canada is not the death sentence that it was fifteen years ago. Depending on how long you've been HIV positive, and what kind of an impact HIV has already had will determine more than what just a positive diagnosis can tell you. With advances in treatments and alternative therapies, people who test HIV positive can continue to lead their lives. Each person responds differently to the virus and to various treatments. Medical advice and knowledge about your options will help in determining the best course of treatment for you.
