411 Q&A With Dwayne Morgan

What inspires you?
I’m inspired by waking up in the morning. Everything that I write about has to do with things that we experience as Human Beings trying to navigate through this existence, so there are few things that I don’t draw inspiration from.

What would you be doing if it isn’t what you are doing now?
This is all I’ve done since I was 18 years old, so I have no clue what I’d be doing if it wasn’t this.

How did your environment shape you?
I think that I’ve been shaped more by people than by an environment.

Hometown
Toronto, Ontario

What do you want to be remembered for?
The legacy that I’ve created and will leave behind, as well as my willingness to give of myself.

Who’s your hero? Why?
Malcolm X. He showed the power one can attain when they decide to educate themselves, the power of language, and a commitment to the betterment of the world that he lived in.

Education
York University, Honours B.A., Mass Communications & Sociology

What makes you tick?
Knowing that there is more that I’m capable of accomplishing.

What makes you happy?
Waking up in the morning. My daughter, family, friends, and being able to do something that I love for a living.

Tell us something about you that no one knows?
I bite my nails whenever I’m anxious, nervous, or bored.

What social cause is most important to you?
Racial injustice, and anything that has to do with teenagers. I feel strongly about these because I live a racialized existence, and have to consider race in all that I do. I also realize that few people take the time to listen to teenagers, so I try my best to give a voice to the issues that are important to them. There was never a turning point that got me involved. I’ve always been taught to do whatever I can for those around me, and that’s what I try to do.

If you could change something what would it be?
Racial inequality, past and present
