What You Can Do About HIV/AIDS

SOURCE: AIDS: PICTURE CHANGE EDUCATIONAL GUIDE

"We can all participate in the global effort to fight back against HIV/AIDS. Here are some ideas about what you can do in your school and community."

-Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary-General

Read the above quote and think about the following questions:

  • How do you feel about the way of thinking that says the HIV/AIDS pandemic is too complex to do anything about it?
  • What would you most like to change about the current HIV/AIDS situation in the world?
  • What actions could you take locally in order to bring about these changes? To stimulate your thinking, you may want to quickly brainstorm a list of actions discussed in The Corner presentation.
  • Remember that youth who live in communities affected by HIV/AIDS are not helpless victims.

In the 411 presentation, we heard about youth around the world who are mobilizing community resources to educate their peers about HIV/AIDS, provide care for people living with HIV/AIDS and advocate for the support they require to fight HIV/AIDS. Canadian youth can join with those worldwide in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

Develop And Execute An Action Plan

How you develop an action plan will largely depend on the capacity and desires of your group. You may want to work on one action as a large group or have an individual project. After you have decided on the type(s) of action, you will need to formulate an action plan listing the tasks associated with your action. The goal is to undertake a sustainable action that contributes to the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Action plans should be:

  • realistic
  • goal-oriented
  • time-specific
